A special message in my email today.

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.

A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one. Yes, I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

But, on the other hand, if you want someone who will never come when you call, ignores you totally when you come home, leaves hair all over the place, walks all over you, runs around all night and only comes home to eat and sleep, and acts as if your entire existence Is solely to ensure his happiness .,

...then adopt a cat!

A Dog's Purpose? (From a 6-year-old)

From my email this week:

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane , who had been listening quietly, piped up, ''I know why.''

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try to live. He said,’ People are born so they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody and being nice, right?''
The six-year-old continued,’ Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.''

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you're not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!

Moose moves in

I recently received this story in my email:
This is from Sandy Ludlow who lives just outside Nelson, BC.

This reads like something out of Readers' Digest, but recently a neighbour went for a walk up Falls Creek (near Nelson BC), found a baby moose in some distress in the creek.
He got him out of the creek, tried to send him on his way, tried to find the mother. Eventually the baby moose stumbled back into the creek, was rescued again, and followed Jonathon home.
Jonathon lives in a very small cabin, so he took the moose to another neighbour (Andrea Smith), who took these photos. (Notice Jonathon's wet sweatshirt!)
I have never even seen moose in this area, so am bewildered that a recently born moose would be on its own, way up a mountainous creek.
They took the moose the next day to Helen Jamieson in Blewett, who looks after wild animals. She put it in a pen with a fawn. Apparently the moose calf/deer fawn combo is excruciatingly cute.

Canine commuter ... wild dog waits on the platform

STRAY dogs are commuting to and from a city centre on underground trains in search of food scraps.

The clever canines board the Tube each morning. After a hard day scavenging and begging on the streets, they hop back on the train and return to the suburbs where they spend the night.

Experts studying the dogs say they even work together to make sure they get off at the right stop after learning to judge the length of time they need to spend on the train..

The dogs choose the quietest carriages at the front and back of the train. They have also developed tactics to hustle humans into giving them more food on the streets of Moscow

Scientists believe the phenomenon began after the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990s, and Russia's new capitalists moved industrial complexes from the city center to the suburbs. Dr. Andrei Poiarkov, of the Moscow Ecology and Evolution Institute, said: These complexes were used by homeless dogs as shelters, so the dogs had to move together with their houses.

Because the best scavenging for food is in the city center, the dogs had to learn how to travel on the subway to get to the center in the morning, then back home in the evening, just like people.

Dr. Poiarkov told how the dogs like to play during their daily commute. He said: They jump on the train seconds before the doors shut, risking their tails getting jammed They do it for fun. And sometimes they fall asleep and get off at the wrong stop.

The dogs have learned to use traffic lights to cross the road safely, said Dr. Poiarkov.
And they use cunning tactics to obtain tasty morsels of shawarma, a kebab-like snack popular in Moscow.
They sneak up behind people eating shawarmas then bark loudly to shock them into dropping their food.

With children, the dogs play cute by putting their heads on youngsters' knees and staring pleadingly into their eyes to win sympathy and scraps. Dr. Poiarkov added: Dogs are surprisingly good psychologists..

The Moscow mutts are not the first animals to use public transport.. In 2006 a Jack Russell in Dunnington, North Yorks, began taking the bus to his local pub in search of sausages. And two years ago, passengers in Wolverhampton were stunned when a cat called Macavity started catching the 331 bus to a fish and chip shop.

Crazy Cat Cat Quest! - a new cat toy

Lucky me! I received a most wonderful gift in my mail box. Of course I was immediately curious and we rushed to open up the box. Inside we found the neatest toy. First thing was to read over the packaging to see what it was all about.

I have to tell you – right from the start and before even taking it out of the packaging, I was enthralled. I read “batteries included”. Someone out there knows how hard it is for one small cat to go out and purchase batteries when it is the immediate curiosity that has my attention.

Then I read “wings move like real bugs!” OK, I'm in. On the back of the package for CAT QUEST!, there, in big words, is HAVE RESPECT. These people have taken their time to care about us cats. They know cats become bored with the same toys and tell our people to rotate them. “For active toys like CAT QUEST! keep play time short so cats don't become exhausted.” Oh yes, we do not want to get carried and play through our nap time.

Once the package was opened, it took less than a minute to put CAT QUEST! together. Let the fun begin! It truly is like chasing a real bug, only my people would not let me capture it. The wings flutter and make that little bug noise which drives us cats buggy. Every once in awhile the human would pause it to let us pounce on it and get the feeling of victory. Then, up and away buzzing and fluttering wings to dive for. We love this toy – it is totally innovative.

I had to find out a little about the people behind this magnificent toy. The toy is made by Cardinal Laboratories, Inc. Their website has great information and wonderful pet products which can be purchased right there in their store. Their products are developed by skilled professionals who most assuredly have the love for animals in their hearts. If I ever quit my writing job, I want to go work for them.

How many stars can one can give for BEST PRODUCT? That is how many we give this product. There is much activity here at our house while we cats hone our hunting skills. Who would have thought this could happen in a downtown condo? Of course by now I know the answer to that: The CRAZY CAT people who developed CAT QUEST had me in mind!
